Gas or electric? What Victoria’s changes mean for you
Victoria’s heating landscape is shifting. From 1 January 2024, new homes and major renovations that need a planning permit can’t connect to gas. Rebates now favour electric systems. Running costs are changing too.

Switching to electric reverse cycle

Old, poorly serviced, or damaged gas heaters can leak carbon monoxide. It’s colourless, odourless, and dangerous. Every winter, Australians end up in hospital because of preventable CO poisoning.
The good news: it’s easy to stay safe. Energy Safe Victoria recommends a gas heater safety check every two years by a licensed technician. That’s not a sales pitch. That’s the standard.

Energy Safe Victoria recommends a safety check every two years. If you have children, elderly family members, or an older heater, we recommend annually. Regular servicing catches carbon monoxide risks early and keeps efficiency up.
Should I switch from gas to electric heating?
It depends on your home. For many households, electric reverse cycle is cheaper to run than gas and unlocks bigger rebates. For larger or older homes, modern gas ducted can still make sense. We’ll work through the numbers with you, honestly.
How much does a new heating system cost?
It depends on the system, the size of your home, and the state of your existing ductwork. A wall heater replacement is very different to a full ducted install. We come out, take proper measurements, and send a clear written quote before any work begins.
What is the VEU rebate and how much can I save?
The Victorian Energy Upgrades program discounts eligible heating upgrades. Rebates vary by product, home, and what you’re replacing. We check your eligibility upfront and apply the discount directly to your quote. Most customers save hundreds to thousands.
Can you help if my heater breaks down in the middle of winter?
